Baseball Notes 5/1/2010

So it's finals week here in college, so I didn't get the Weekdays Review and Weekend Preview out, but I'll do an abbreviated version of it here 5/1/2010:

Most impressive performance: San Francisco Giants (13-9) taking two of three from the Phillies (12-10), but it felt like it should have been a sweep. See below. The Giants bounced back with a 5-2 win over the Rockies (11-12) last night behind a strong performance from Barry Zito.

Another impressive performance: New York Mets (14-9) sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers (9-14). The Mets are playing some good baseball right now and now have won 8 in a row following last night's win over the Phillies. It's also good to see the Dodgers in last place. I was also impressed by the Tampa Bay Rays taking both games from the Oakland Athletics (12-12). The Rays (17-6) have the best record in baseball.

Least impressive performance: I'll say the Atlanta Braves getting swept in a four game series by the St. Louis Cardinals (15-8) at Busch Stadium. Those losses pushed the Braves' (9-14) losing streak to 9 games before they finally pulled one out at home last night, beating the Houston Astros (8-14) 4-2.

Weekend Best Series: Mets at Phillies. Right now on FOX, tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. MT on ESPN and espn3.com. The two hated NL East rivals are renewing acquantainces. Hopefully the Phils can cool off the Mets a bit. It's always fun when these two go at it, there's a lot of energy at the ballpark. As much as I don't like the Mets, it does seem like there is more energy there when they are playing well.

Another Good Series: Rockies at Giants. Two growing NL West rivals who should be in the race all season. See below.

Least intriguing: Red Sox (11-12) at Orioles (5-18). Neither team playing particularly well and the O's are just plain bad. The Orioles took the opener last night 5-4.
