The Versus Network is gaining credibility in my eyes. I've noticed of late that they have an ESPN-style bottom line running on their screen with updates from the major sports coming in. The updates aren't like the amateur updates that you'll see from some upstart networks either, you know the ones that are way behind on the scores compared to where the actual games are.
Versus has had NHL coverage for some time now and is finally doing something that has long been overdue: having a show on a nightly basis that covers the NHL, giving highlights and analysis. To me this shows that Versus is getting more professional and more serious about the NHL. ESPN has shows specifically dedicated to the major sports it covers and now Versus has followed suit. It is also a plus that Versus was able to put an end to the contract dispute they had with DirecTV last year. If you want to be a recognized network, you need to be available on all the cable and satellite systems. With these changes, it wouldn't surprise me if Versus makes a play to acquire more games in more sports in the coming years.
