Utah (2-1) defeated #25 BYU (2-1) tonight 24-21 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. It was one of the craziest finishes to a game I have ever seen. It was even a little crazy for a Utah-BYU game. I thought the last minute was a combination of past rivalry games. You had BYU converting on 4th and long from deep in their own territory. You had a blocked field goal. And then after that, you had a field goal bounce off the upright. It really is amazing that you could have that many things like that happen again.
I think it's fair to say that BYU had a fair shot to win the game and that Utah won it fair and sqaure. For that I am glad. I guess that's the main thing at this point. I am happy for the Utes!

Thoughts on the bracket
Well, the NCAA Tournament is almost upon us. The brackets have been released and the play-in games start Tuesday (I don't care what people say, they are play-in games). Now, for my review of the bracket.
I don't think there's too much to gripe about regarding the four #1 seeds. And really, as Kansas' Bill Self, Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Missouri's Frank Haith were saying, it's not really a big deal whether you are a 1 or 2 (although I guess it's kind of cool to say you are a #1 seed, that in itself doesn't win you a trip to the Final Four or a National Championship). As Charles Barkley also said today, getting a top seed really only gets you a better deal for the first game. After that, pretty much any team can beat any other on a given day if the circumstances break right.
The most compelling discussion at this point is breaking down who should have gotten in and who should have been left out. I don't have an issue with BYU getting in, although I was surprised at a #14 seed -- I cannot remember an at-large team ever receiving such a low seed.
I was shocked that Colorado received a #11 seed, much higher than what I anticipated. If we are to actually believe that they wouldn't have been in if they hadn't beaten Arizona in the Pac-12 Tournament Championship yesterday (which I firmly believe), they should have been more like a #13 seed, a #12 seed at best (which still would have been a bit generous in my book).
Anyway, my point is that if Colorado, the sixth-place team in the Pac-12, is deserving of a #11 seed, then surely, the conference regular season champion, Washington, is deserving of at least a #11 seed (and inclusion in the Tournament). California absolutely deserved a better seed than Colorado as well, because after all they were the second-place team in the Pac-12.
Look, I'm not saying Washington necessarily deserved to get in, but logic states that if Colorado's an 11, Washington should be in. Colorado belonged more as a #13 seed. I could see that with Cal as an 11 or 12 (not in the play-in game, mind you) and Washington getting left out. That would be logical. But what happened is simply not logical.
Also, I'm surprised Iona got in. I would have taken Drexel over them every single day of the week. Drexel had a long winning streak in a good league and a good record. I don't think the CAA gets enough respect. Iona's profile just doesn't measure up to Drexel's. But, that's cool for them that they got in, I guess.
Fact is, teams like Washington had chances to get in and didn't capitalize. I don't feel as bad for them. I do feel bad for Drexel, as they didn't have as many chances at "quality" wins. But, I guess they should have beaten VCU to make sure they got in. Still, it's a downer they didn't get in. They looked like a good team watching them against VCU last Monday.

More on the Utes' big win
I thought BYU (1-2) played very sloppy the other night and that was a big part of the reason Utah was able to win by so much. I had picked BYU to win this game close at home and I was surprised by their lack of intensity and discipline, particularly in the second half. Utah (2-1, 0-1 Pac-12), though, should be given credit for applying the pressure as well as forcing and recovering them. Their skills and athleticism factoring into the win should also not be understated. Utah won the game big for a reason and forced a lot of those mistakes that BYU made.
It looked like once BYU got down by a few scores that their defense just threw in the towel, so to speak. The Utes appeared to just be trying to run the ball and take some time off the clock in the fourth quarter, but were unable to use a lot of time because they scored on a couple of long runs. It really looked to me like the defense laid down a bit. That's not acceptable from BYU's standpoint, but it is very gratifying to me as a Utah fan to see my team help bring its biggest rival to that point.
I thought Jordan Wynn was still a bit shaky at quarterback, especially for the better part of the first half. Wynn had one pass picked off and by all rights should have had another one intercepted had it not been for a BYU defender dropping a ball thrown right to him. However, I have to give Wynn credit for leading a couple of big touchdown drives late in the first half and early in the second half while the game was still in question. That shows a lot of heart.
On the other hand, I thought BYU quarterback Jake Heaps had a terrible game. I lost track of how many turnovers he had, but I know that there were at least a couple of egregious ones. Of particular note was his fumble on the Cougars' opening drive of the game when the snap went over his head. Instead of just falling on the ball, Heaps attempted to pick it up and when he failed to do so, the Utes pounced on it in the endzone for a quick touchdown. Had Heaps just fallen on the ball, BYU would have just had to punt, instead they were down 7-0.
It wasn't his only instance of poor judgement on the night. On top of that, he missed several open receivers that could have kept a number of BYU drives alive. I don't know if it would have made a difference in the long haul, but it certainly didn't help BYU's cause. I thought Heaps was going to have a great year, especially based on how strongly he finished out last season. His poor play is a bit of a shocker to me.
There is no doubt that Utah is a much better team. The Utes played harder and much more consistently than the Cougars and were able to substantially win the turnover battle. Additionally, it looked like Utah was simply more athletic and more talented than BYU; this especially became apparent in the second half.

Utes throttle BYU

Utah (2-1, 0-1 Pac-12) defeated BYU (1-2) tonight in LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo by a score of 54-10. It was the largest margin of victory the Utes have ever had in Provo. I had the pleasure of being at the game and without providing an exact order, I'd have to say it is easily one of my favorite sporting events I have ever attended.
The whole thing really was a stunner. I actually thought BYU would win this game, being at home as well as looking to avenge last year's 17-16 loss in Salt Lake City. I also didn't think there would be a ton of points from either team. When BYU turned the ball over three times in the first quarter and Utah only managed seven points out of it (on a defensive touchdown), I thought the Utes would have trouble scoring.
In fact, BYU led 10-7 with less than a minute to go in the first half. That is really hard to believe given the final score. The Utes scored before halftime and then turned into a buzzsaw for the second half. It literally was hard to keep track of all the touchdowns, as they kept rolling in at a very high rate.
It suffices me to say that Utah just played very well in all phases of the game (well, except the kicking game -- a missed field goal and extra point, but I'll look past that for now), especially in the second half. I honestly didn't know the Utes had that in them.
It was the first time I have been at a Utah victory in Provo and I was soaking it up. There is just something about beating your biggest rival on their homefield that is just a great thing. It's a great time to be a Ute. As a Utah fan, it was also fun seeing the stadium rapidly empty out starting late in the third quarter. It was just a really good night at the game.
On another note, I liked both teams wearing their home uniforms. The colors contrast enough to make it work. I'm told that is the theme for the 2011-2012 year as part of the Deseret Duel between the two schools. I hope the Utes and Cougars continue to both wear their home uniforms against each other in the future.
It's late, so I'm not going to get into all the details, but tonight was one of those nights where it was really rewarding to be a loyal fan to a team. I love my Utes! Way to go!

More college football predictions
Don't worry, I'll have an update on the World Champion San Francisco Giants (73-65) and their big series this weekend against the Arizona Diamondbacks (78-60) either tomorrow or Monday. But now, I'm going to break down the other Utah I-A schools. Let's start with that school down south, BYU:
-- Sat. 9/3: at Ole Miss -- Loss. I think BYU probably has more talent, but I think traveling all the way across the country to play in heat and humidity in front of a hostile SEC crowd will take its toll. I think Ole Miss pulls it out at home by 4.
-- Sat. 9/10: at Texas: -- Loss. Not an easy place to play at all and the Longhorns are typically pretty tough. Texas by 10 or 14.
-- Sat. 9/17: vs. Utah: -- Win. Not easy for me to type, but being objective, that's my pick. BYU appears to have a distinct edge at quarterback, plus will be at home and attempting to avenge last year's last-second defeat. I think the Cougars win it, but it will be close, as it usually seems to be.
-- Fri. 9/23: vs. UCF: -- Win. BYU should win this one by I'll say 14. UCF might be a little tougher than people think, but BYU should be able to handle them in Provo.
-- Fri. 9/30: vs. Utah State -- Win. The Cougars should be motivated to avenge the embarrassing loss last year in Logan and I think will win by a couple of scores.
-- Sat. 10/8: vs. San Jose State -- Win. BYU should win this one by at least 28 points, San Jose State's program has been awful for some time now.
-- Sat. 10/15: at Oregon State -- Win. I think Jake Heaps will be the difference in this one as the Cougars pull out a squeaker on the road.
-- Sat. 10/22: vs. Idaho State -- Win. Just a mere walk-over. Shouldn't be remotely close.
-- Fri. 10/28: at TCU -- Loss. Game played at Cowboys Stadium. The Horned Frogs will be playing in front of largely a home crowd and always seem to get up for BYU. Plus, TCU is pretty good. I think the Frogs win by 7.
-- Sat. 11/12: vs. Idaho -- Win. This should be a win by at least three scores, particularly at home.
-- Sat. 11/19: vs. New Mexico State -- Win. Should be a very lopsided victory as NMSU has been really bad for quite a while.
-- Sat. 12/3: at Hawaii -- Win. I think Hawaii will be up for this game and the Warriors always seem to play BYU tough on the islands, but I don't think Hawaii has enough talent to pull the upset, although it will be a close game. BYU by a field goal.
There you have it, 9-3 and a bowl game in their first season as an Independent. I'll be interested to see how it plays out.
Now I know Utah State is already underway, but to be fair I had already chalked up today as a loss for them. Here's the breakdown for the Aggies:
-- Sat. 9/3: at Auburn -- Loss. I'm surprised USU is up at halftime as I had them pegged to lose this game big, but I still don't think they pull off the upset.
-- Sat. 9/10: vs. Weber State -- Win. Should be relatively easy against an in-state I-AA school.
-- Sat. 9/24: vs. Colorado State -- Win. I'm a little iffy on this one, but I think the Aggies can pull out a close one at home.
-- Fri. 9/30: at BYU -- Loss. BYU has to be really upset about last year's stunning loss in Logan and I think the Cougars win this one by a couple of touchdowns.
-- Sat. 10/8: vs. Wyoming -- Win. The Pokes just aren't that good and I think Utah State wins by 10 or 14 at home.
-- Sat. 10/15: at Fresno State -- Loss. Fresno State is a solid program and although I think Utah State will be better this year, I don't think they will be good enough to win this one on the road.
-- Sat. 10/22: vs. Louisiana Tech -- Win. Utah State should handle a mediocre Louisana Tech squad at home.
-- Sat. 11/5: at Hawaii -- Loss. Hawaii is traditionally quite tough at home and I just don't see the Aggies flying all the way out to the islands and coming back with a win.
-- Sat. 11/12: vs. San Jose State -- Win. The Spartans have been one of the worst teams in I-A in recent years, Utah State should win this one easily.
-- Sat. 11/19: at Idaho -- Loss. I think the Vandals win this one close at home; Idaho has shown signs of improvement in recent years.
-- Sat. 11/26: vs. Nevada -- Loss. The Wolfpack just have more talent than the Aggies and will win in Logan by about 10.
-- Sat. 12/3: at New Mexico State -- Win. Same story as SJSU, New Mexico State has been terrible in recent years. Utah State wins by a couple of touchdowns.
That comes out as 6-6, 3-4 in the WAC and possibly a bowl bid in the first time in what feels like forever for USU. I think they would take that at this point.

Unprofessional media; Sweet 16 gets under way tonight
Some really ridiculous questions were asked at Wednesday's press conference in New Orleans, regarding BYU's honor code, etc. Gary Parrish has some nice thoughts on it. It really is rather ridiculous that the journalists asking these questions are considered professionals. Again, even though I'm not a BYU fan, it makes me very happy to be LDS when I know the school that my church sponsors is willing to stick by its values. And major props to Florida star Chandler Parsons for not taking the bait from the media when asked about the situation.
The Sweet Sixteen gets under way tonight on CBS and TBS. In Anaheim we have (2) San Diego State vs. (3) Connecticut in the early game and (1) Duke vs. (5) Arizona in the night cap. In New Orleans it's (2) Florida vs. (3) BYU in the early game and (4) Wisconsin vs. (8) Butler in the night cap. I anticipate all being good games and I'm excited to see how they turn out. The two early games in particular I anticipate being very close and very exciting all the way down to the closing minutes. In the Florida-BYU game I really don't have a good feel on who will win, so I'll just have to watch and find out.

New Mexico upsets #3 BYU
New Mexico (19-11, 7-8 MWC) got a big upset road victory against #3 BYU (27-3, 13-2 MWC) by a score of 82-64. The Lobos jumped on the Cougars early and never really let the game get that close. It was BYU's first game without big man Brandon Davies, who was suspended for an honor code violation (more on that in a moment). BYU just didn't look like they knew what hit them and New Mexico played better and with more energy from start to finish.
Even without Davies, this game is a complete shocker. BYU rarely loses at home and I don't remember the last time they got blown out at home. It's definitely a big win for the Lobos, who are looking to ride this momentum into their home finale against Air Force (15-13, 6-9 MWC) on Saturday and then to the conference tournament next week. I think the win is a huge testament to New Mexico coach Steve Alford, who clearly knows how to get his team up for big games. The Lobos are the only MWC team to beat BYU this year as they swept the Cougars.
This a really tough loss for BYU as it basically ends all conversations about them being a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. BYU still will likely get a share of the conference title and the top seed in the conference tournament next week, they only have to beat Wyoming (10-19, 3-12 MWC) to ensure this. However, the loss really has to sting. Jimmer Fredette looked completely disconsolate after the game, like he was going to throw up; so I know he is taking the loss hard. This means the Cougars will have a tougher draw in the NCAA Tournament, but they are still a talented team that can do some damage. I found it interesting that BYU coach Dave Rose had Fredette and Jackson Emery on the bench to the end of the game, maybe he figured it was out of reach? Or was he unhappy with the two? I don't think there is a rift between Coach Rose and his players by any means, it was just an interesting thing to see. If anything, this shows that the Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas next week could be very entertaining and unpredictable.
I'm not a BYU fan, but definitely identify myself as LDS. I think the whole Brandon Davies situation is rather sad for the team and that Davies didn't act wisely at all. But I am also glad that a school that is owned by the church I belong to has enough moral strength to uphold its self-imposed code of ethics. Pat Forde of espn.com wrote an article on this that I think highlights what an admirable stand BYU is taking. Again, I'm not rejoicing in the whole thing, it's too bad that the whole situation happened, I'm just glad that BYU and the church I belong to are taking a stand on morals even though a lot of schools around the country don't tend to do so.

Runnin' Utes fall to CSU
Utah (13-16, 6-9 MWC) lost at Colorado State (19-10, 9-6 MWC) tonight by a score of 78-65. Utah played well in spurts but just did not have the consistency and mental toughness that are necessary to win on the road. Utah next hosts UNLV (22-7, 10-5 MWC) at the Huntsman Center. A loss there and there would be a good chance that the Utes would have to face #9 San Diego State in the first round of the MWC Tournament next week. A win and there is the possibility that Utah will have to face the Runnin' Rebels again on their home floor in the first round of the MWC Tournament. These scenarios are more likely if New Mexico holds on to their 20 point lead at #3 BYU tonight with under 9 minutes to go in the game. Again, a lot can happen and we'll have to see how things shake out. But it would be really nice to finish out this tough regular season with a home win.
I thought Utah could give CSU a better game than they did tonight; I'm disappointed in a lot of ways. I thought the Runnin' Utes would play with more poise and at least make it a close game. It was disappointing in a lot of ways. Utah just needs to try and right the ship in the last game and then look at how the match-ups shake out for the MWC Tournament and try to make the most of it. Utah needs to figure out how to play with poise all the time and play complete games -- they are running out of time to do this. The modest 3-game win streak was nice, but if they don't win again this season it will still be a disappointment. There is work still left to do.
I don't care for a lot about The Mtn., but I do have to admit I have become rather fond of announcer Dave Bolwinkel, who is currently calling the BYU-New Mexico game. Bolwinkel gives some really great insights and his passion for the game makes him fun to listen to. I can't believe the lead New Mexico has right now, we'll see if this holds up.

Davies dismissed for remainder of the season
#3 BYU (27-2, 13-1 MWC) announced yesterday that starting center Brandon Davies has been dismissed from the team for the remainder due to an unspecified honor code violation. Davies was pretty much the only low post threat that the Cougars had and was also a big asset on the defensive end of the floor. His size and athleticism were very valuable for BYU in defending similar types of big men, such as San Diego State's Kawhi Leonard.
Davies will undoubtedly be missed and his loss does put a damper on the Cougars' chances to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. However, BYU is still a threat and still has a number of good players, starting with the dynamic Jimmer Fredette. They are still capable of making a strong run, but it will just be more difficult now. BYU has two home games left in the regular season, starting tonight at 8 p.m. MT on The Mtn. against New Mexico (18-11, 6-8 MWC) and then on Saturday against Wyoming (10-19, 3-12 MWC). I don't see any way that the Cougars will lose either of those games, but the real toll could come in the NCAA Tournament.

#7 BYU tops #6 SDSU for second time
#7 BYU (27-2, 13-1 MWC) knocked off #6 San Diego State (27-2, 12-2 MWC) on Saturday in San Diego by a score of 80-67. The place was pretty raucous as I thought it would be, but the Aztecs didn't benefit from it as much as I thought they would. Here are some observations I had from watching the game:
- BYU definitely seemed to be the better team.
- BYU can make some noise in the NCAA Tournament if they continue to shoot 3s like that -- it seemed like nobody could miss from long range.
- San Diego State seemed too hyped up for the game and it appeared that they let their nerves get the best of them, missing a number of close baskets.
- BYU seemed to have a good mental approach and while realizing it was a big game, played relaxed enough to still be effective.
I thought it was pretty cool that CBS recognized it as a big game and sent its top team of announcers to the game. It was weird in a way for the Mountain West to get real national exposure for a regular season game. I thought San Diego State actually played better in the first match-up between the two teams than they did in the rematch. If the Aztecs are to have a chance if there is a rematch in the Mountain West Tournament, they need to play more relaxed, cash in on more offensive rebounds, maintain focus, not make stupid mental mistakes, and come up with timely, big shots. Of course doing all those things in a big game is a lot easier said than done. BYU seemed to hit the big shots in this one and, as has been noted, there were a number of guys doing it. This team has momentum and could be hard to stop.

#6 SDSU vs. #7 BYU
It's #7 BYU (26-2, 12-1 MWC) at #6 SDSU (27-1, 12-1 MWC) Saturday at noon MT. The game will be televised on CBS. It's clearly the game of the weekend and one of the top games of the season in the MWC. This one will likely decide the regular season title. The game has been sold out for weeks and I expect to see a pretty raucous environment in there. I'll take the Aztecs in a close one at home, but this one could definitely go either way. I'll be tweeting periodically and have more thoughts after the game.

Utes-Pokes tonight
Utah (10-15, 3-8 MWC) hosts Wyoming (9-16, 2-9 MWC) tonight at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City. Tip-off is set for about 7:15 p.m. MT and the game will be televised on CBS College Sports. I'll be at the game and will be tweeting updates, so follow along. I'll also be on here after for recap and analysis. The Runnin' Utes already took down the Cowboys earlier this season in Laramie with a 17 point win. I think that Utah will win again in the second go-round tonight. I was encouraged by how hard they played on Saturday in the loss at rival #7 BYU (24-2, 10-1 MWC) and I'm optimistic that this level of play will carry over into tonight's game. It's pretty much a must-win for the Utes, or they could be staring at another 7-game losing streak as they are at New Mexico (17-8, 5-5 MWC) on Saturday night in The Pit, which is always a tough place to win. I'm off for now, but check me out on Twitter and I'll keep you posted on the game. Go Utes!

Utes lose rivalry game
My Utah Runnin' Utes (10-15, 3-8 MWC) lost yesterday afternoon at #7 BYU (24-2, 10-1 MWC) by a score of 72-59. BYU's Jimmer Fredette led all scorers with 23 points and Charles Abouo added 22 for the Cougars. Will Clyburn led Utah with 18 points and Chris Kupets came off the bench to add 14.
I was proud of the Utes for playing so hard and thought they really executed their stuff well for most of the day. I was impressed with how well they got back on defense to prevent transition baskets for most of the game as well as with the way they slowed up the pace of the game and made it more of a grinder. Utah played really played good defense and showed a lot of energy on both ends of the floor. I thought freshman J.J. O'Brien did a really good job on Fredette.
However, the Utes ran out of gas after having the game tied with under 10 minutes to go and BYU came through with enough plays to win, which is what good teams do. I was happy the Utes played so hard, but at the end of the day, it's still a loss. It doesn't appear that Coach Jim Boylen has lost the team and they still seem to be playing hard. If they play this hard the rest of the year, I would probably be cool with having him back next year. It certainly was a much better effort yesterday, than it was earlier in the week when the Utes were pounded by 32 points at #6 San Diego State (25-1, 10-1 MWC). Utah has five games left in conference play and they really need to take the bull by the horns and compete in all of them -- they definitely have the talent to do so. The Runnin' Utes next host Wyoming (9-16, 2-9 MWC) on Wednesday night.

Runnin' Utes drop ugly contest
Utah (10-12, 3-5 MWC) lost at UNLV (17-5, 5-3 MWC) last night 67-54. Utah shot just 29.8 percent from the field and an embarrassing 56 percent from the free-throw line. UNLV didn't shoot the cover off the ball either, shooting 36.9 percent from the field and 63 percent on free throws. Quintrell Thomas led the Runnin' Rebels with 15 points and Carlos Lopez had 14. Will Clyburn of the Runnin' Utes led all scorers with 17 points and Josh Watkins had 15.
If you follow me on Twitter, you know that this was one of the more painful games I've ever watched. I don't say that just as a Utah fan, but as a big fan of college basketball in general. Both teams executed poorly on offense, but Utah was definitely the worse of the two teams, turning the ball over 17 times. Both teams played solid defense, but the Runnin' Utes especially just looked sloppy throughout the game.
With the defense as good as it was, I felt Utah could have done a lot more to be competitive in this game and perhaps even come away with a victory, but you'll be hard pressed to find a team win a game with as poor of an offensive showing as Utah had. The Utes return home for a must-win game Saturday night against Air Force (12-9, 3-5 MWC), with whom they are tied for sixth place in the conference. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. MT and the game will be televised on the Mtn.
UNLV will be in Provo on Saturday afternoon to face #8 BYU (21-2, 7-1 MWC) at 2 p.m. MT on Versus. The Cougars escaped Wyoming last night with a 69-62 victory despite a game effort from the Cowboys (8-14, 1-7 MWC). Jimmer Fredette had a huge conventional 3 point play with under a minute to go and BYU up just one point that pretty much sealed the game. It was just another clutch play from Fredette. #7 San Diego State (22-1, 7-1 MWC) kept pace in the conference with a 56-54 win at Colorado State (15-7, 5-3 MWC) that came when D.J. Gay knocked down a jumper with under two seconds left. With so much exciting happening in the Mountain West, it's too bad that Utah couldn't play a more exciting, competitive game.

New Mexico pulls off upset of #8 BYU
#8 BYU (20-2, 6-1 MWC) followed up their win over #7 San Diego State (21-1, 6-1) with a loss at New Mexico (15-7, 3-4 MWC) on Saturday by a score of 86-77. Freshman Tony Snell hit 3 big shots for the Lobos down the stretch to help them pull away and send the sell-out crowd in Albuquerque into a frenzy. Snell and fellow freshman Kendall Williams each had 16 points for New Mexico.
Player of the Year candidate Jimmer Fredette of BYU led all scorers with 32 points, but seemed to wear down in the closing minutes, missing shots that I'm not used to seeing him miss. To be fair, Fredette still scored 32 points and still shot a very solid percentage. It may have just proved that Fredette is human after all, but I think fatigue did get to him a little bit. New Mexico was able to whether the storm of Fredette's and BYU's potent scoring attack and hang around in the game. Down the stretch, the Lobos were able to make the plays necessary to win.
The win was much needed for New Mexico, who perhaps played with a bit more desperation knowing they couldn't afford to drop another conference game. They also undoubtedly fed off the emotion from the crowd. The Lobos are still a bubble team when it comes to NCAA Tournament considerations, but this win certainly gives them a very much needed quality win that could help them on Selection Sunday. New Mexico will have to play a bit more consistently as the 2nd half of conference play approaches if they are going to feel good about their Tournament chances.
BYU is still a really good team that is a lock for the Tournament and at worst will finish second in the Mountain West this year. The Pit is a really tough place to play and a lot of teams lose there, so it's not a totally shocking loss. It really appears to be a two team race between them and San Diego State at this point, although Colorado State (15-6, 5-2 MWC) could make things a bit more interesting with a home win over the Aztecs on Wednesday (7 p.m. MT, CBS College Sports). BYU next plays at Wyoming (8-13, 1-6 MWC) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. MT on the Mtn. The Cowboys are coming off a 96-57 loss at SDSU on Saturday. New Mexico next plays tomorrow night at Air Force (12-8, 3-4 MWC) at 6 p.m. MT on the Mtn.

More thoughts on BYU-SDSU
Just to wrap up what I was saying about the SDSU-BYU game the other night, I thought both teams played well defensively and I think the crowd and Fredette were the differences in the game. I think it can really work on a team's psyche when they start realizing that they are against the ropes for the first time in the season and the thought that there is a good chance they could lose enters their mind. A huge crowd cheering against you helps to build those feelings as well.
#9 BYU (20-1, 6-0 MWC) took the lead early in the 2nd half and never trailed again. # 4 San Diego State (20-1, 5-1 MWC) was able to stay in the game with good defense and a few timely shots, but they really weren't able to execute offensively down the stretch. I think BYU's defense had a lot to do with that. And of course, Fredette made some key shots for BYU down the stretch as well. The Aztecs seemed to struggle on offense late, I feel like if they could have just been a little more consistent, the game could have even come down to the final possession. Kawhi Leonard had a big game with points and rebounds for San Diego State despite being under the weather and I believe hooked up to an IV earlier in the day. Leonard is a real force down low and an incredible athlete -- he gets rebounds that he just doesn't look like he is in position to get. His effort was impressive. I'll be interested to see how long Fredette can keep up this high level of scoring. BYU plays at New Mexico (14-7, 2-4 MWC) tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. MT on Versus and San Diego State hosts Wyoming (8-12, 1-5 MWC) at 8 p.m. MT on the Mtn.

#9 BYU tops #4 San Diego State
#9 BYU (20-1, 6-0 MWC) defeated #4 San Diego State (20-1, 5-1 MWC) last night by a score of 71-58 last night in one of the more highly anticipated match-ups to date in the college basketball season. BYU guard Jimmer Fredette was once again the story, pouring in 43 points for the Cougars. He seemed like he couldn't miss for a while and really carried the Cougars all night long. BYU students rushed the floor following the win.
It was a raucous environment all night and San Diego State actually hung in the game pretty well and seemed to execute pretty well until the closing minutes. As Gary Parrish of CBS said, it would have been tough for any team in the country to win in that environment last night. More thoughts on this later as I have to run now.

Top 10 match-up tomorrow night
Tomorrow night it's #4 San Diego State (20-0, 5-0 MWC) at #9 BYU (19-1, 5-0 MWC) at 8 p.m. MT in Provo. The game will be televised on CBS College Sports. I'll be at the game and will be tweeting updates live from the Marriott Center. Utah (10-10, 3-3 MWC) is obviously my team, but the Runnin' Utes aren't playing again until Saturday and I am a big fan of college basketball as a whole. Thus, when there is a marquee match-up featuring two top ten teams within driving distance of where I live, I feel like it's worth making an effort to be there.
I'm interested to see how the Aztecs will perform in what will be their biggest test of the year to date. The game has been sold out for days now and that really is saying something considering that the capacity is over 22,000. I expect it will be a loud, raucous atmosphere and I'm sure that I will be one of the few people not making a lot of noise in support of the Cougars. I just want to be there and hopefully see a great college basketball game. I'll definitely be back here to blog about the outcome and give some analysis following the game.
I think BYU will win a close game because they are at home and because they have Jimmer Fredette. San Diego State presents BYU with a lot of match-up problems with their size and athleticism, particularly with their big and quick forwards Kawhi Leonard and Malcolm Thomas. I expect those guys will each be in double figures and causing problems down low. D.J. Gay could be an x-factor for the Aztecs if he is able to knock down a lot of shots from the outside. However, I think the home crowd will be a huge advantage to BYU -- I think they really feed off the energy of their crowd at home, particularly when they get running in transition. That will be a key for the Aztecs -- to limit BYU's running game and to get back on defense. The bigger problem for SDSU will be trying to limit Fredette. I think ultimately Fredette will be the difference in the game, but it should be a good match-up that could go either way.

Utah gets blown out by Fredette, BYU
#11 BYU (17-1, 3-0 MWC) defeated Utah (7-10, 0-3 MWC) last night by a score of 104-79. BYU's National Player of the Year candidate Jimmer Fredette had 47 points, including 32 in the first half. Fredette made just about every shot he took, no matter the level of difficulty. I thought Utah guarded him pretty well for the most part. There's just not a whole lot you can do when I guy is in the zone like that.
Late in the first half Utah was down by just five and following a three the lead was 8 with it appearing that the Runnin' Utes would get the last shot of the half. The Utes came up empty and BYU had just a couple of ticks left on the clock. My girlfriend turned to me and said that at least we would only be down by 8 at halftime and I (rather sarcastically) said "Unless Jimmer makes a shot from half-court." And well, he made a shot from just inside half-court (with a hand in his face) to give BYU an 11 point lead at the break. Again, not a lot you can do.
It really was a remarkable performance by Fredette and I can appreciate seeing a guy do that to some extent even though he plays for my school's hated rival. As I told a friend of mine, I just wish he had picked someone else to have that huge of a night against. It was a tough pill to swallow, I really hate to see my team lose to those guys, especially when it's by 25 points.
I thought Utah played pretty well for about 3/4 of the game, believe it or not. The Runnin' Utes had the lead about half way through the first half and looked like they had a lot of energy and focus. I thought they maintained that pretty much through the remainder of the half, but fell behind mainly because Fredette was going off.
Utah did enough to stay relatively in the game at least through about the first ten minutes of the second half, trailing by roughly 10 points for most of the stretch. The Utes were running their offense pretty well and trading punches with Fredette and the Cougars. I thought a really crushing blow came when BYU center Noah Hartsock made back-to-back wide open three-pointers to stretch the lead from 9 to 15. After that the Runnin' Utes still had energy, but their focus wasn't as much. I think they panicked as they began to turn it over on just about every possession -- usually very quickly -- and BYU would capitalize with points on the other end.
Look, BYU still would have won the game even if the Utes hadn't had the wheels come off and started turning it over on almost every possession, but it would have been by more like 10 or 15 points rather than 25 points. It would have been nice to keep it close, but as it was Utah got embarrassed.
I was noting that I thought BYU coach Dave Rose was a classy guy for removing Fredette from the game with 5:44 left and the Cougars up 29 points, but then he put him back in shortly after that with the lead all the way down to 24 points with a little over four minutes to go. Rose said "I thought the momentum had changed, so I got him in and got him out of there." Fredette added a couple of more points before Rose pulled him again with 3:07 to go. I still think Rose is a good guy, but there is no way that Utah was going to overcome that 24 point deficit with 4 minutes and change left. It was completely unnecessary; the Utes had gone on a little run, but it was still far from being a game.
To Rose's credit, he did pull Fredette again rather than leave him in to pursue the magical number of 50 points. A lot of coaches would have left a guy going for that many points out there. So, though the move was totally unnecessary, at least Rose didn't leave him out there for the duration of the game. Utah coach Jim Boylen, like me, didn't appear to like the move to reinsert Fredette much when he said after the game that he didn't want to comment on it. I don't blame him for not saying anything, but I'm positive he wasn't thrilled about it.
I wasn't too impressed by how Fredette handled the situation, who appeared to attempt to have another player run to the bench when Rose subbed him out for the final time. It was clear he wanted 50 points and he admitted as much afterward. I just don't think he had enough respect for the opponent or class in how he handled that situation. Basketball is a team game and when your team has the win wrapped up you should just take that, lay off a little bit and not make the game a total embarrassment. I've thought Fredette was a nice enough guy, but I wasn't impressed with how he handled all that. All that being said, as a Utah fan I have to tip my hat to him for having a great night.
Will Clyburn led the Runnin' Utes with 23 points, Josh Watkins had 18, and freshman J.J. O'Brien pitched in 13. Jackson Emery added 20 for the Cougars who next play at home next Tuesday against TCU (9-8, 0-2 MWC) at 8 p.m. MT. Utah next plays at Wyoming (8-8, 1-1 MWC) on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. MT in a game that will be televised by the Mtn.

Utah-BYU tonight
Utah (7-9, 0-2 MWC) hosts rival #11 BYU (16-1, 2-0 MWC) at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City at 6:30 p.m. MT. The game will be televised on the Mtn. Tonight is the Red Out, so please everyone if you are going to the game, wear a lot of red -- I know I will be. For the Red Out, Utah will be wearing their red jerseys as well. Hopefully there will be a lot of red, a lot of support, a lot of fans and a lot of noise.
The Runnin' Utes have lost 6 straight games while the Cougars have won 6 straight and only lost once all season. Utah is coming off a 71-62 loss to #6 San Diego State (17-0, 2-0 MWC) that is kind of encouraging because the Utes were able to play with a great team for most of the game. I, however, am tired of any kind of moral victories and feel this team needs to start winning games in order to turn things around.
Unfortunately, I don't think tonight will be that night. Utah matches up better with San Diego State than they do with BYU plus the Cougars have star guard Jimmer Fredette who is having a monster season. I think BYU wins this game by about 15 points. I'm hopeful that I'm wrong, but that's just how I see it. I think BYU is just too good, too focused, too consistent to lose tonight. And I really am amazed by how good of a season Fredette is having. I was particularly impressed with his play in last Wednesday night's win at UNLV (13-3, 1-1 MWC). I didn't think BYU would be able to win down there but this team really showed me something in that game.
Hopefully the Runnin' Utes are hungry and motivated to get a big upset win tonight. I would love for that to happen as I hate losing to BYU. To get the win it'll take a full 40 minutes of effort and focus on both ends of the court plus some extra concerted effort to slow down Fredette. I'll be at the game and tweeting, plus I'll have recap and analysis following the game back here on my blog. Go Utes!
