Oswalt to Phillies, other trades

The Philadelphia Phillies (56-46) acquired starting pitcher Roy Oswalt from the Houston Astros (42-59) today in exchange for pitcher J.A. Happ and two prospects. Oswalt has been the Astros ace for years and should really give the Phillies a bump in their rotation that also includes Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels. It really just furthers my confidence that the Phils will be in the playoffs. They have already won eight straight as it is and trail the Atlanta Braves (58-43) by 2.5 games. They have really cut into the Braves' lead in the East and I think that the Phils will take the division for the fourth consecutive year.

In other trades that went down today, the Texas Rangers (59-42) acquired infielder Jorge Cantu from the Florida Marlins (51-51) and the San Diego Padres (60-40) acquired Miguel Tejada from the Baltimore Orioles (31-70). Also, the Minnesota Twins (56-46) have just acquired Matt Capps from the Washington Nationals (44-58) to help bolster their bullpen. Cantu should provide Texas with a little extra pop in an already potent lineup and Capps should be good for some late inning relief for the Twins to help them in the AL Central chase. Tejada is a mere shadow of the player who once won the MVP with the Athletics and I don't think his contribution will be too extreme, although I think he could help the Padres to some degree. Yeah it's that time of year, trades are going down all over the place. The Giants (58-45) have yet to make a move, we'll see if they get in on the action before the deadline at 2 p.m. MT on Saturday.
