I'm tired of NBA players deciding that they just can't play for the team that drafted them. Dwight Howard is the latest in the line of many. Seriously, just suck it up and play. Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Deron Williams all seemed to want out of smaller markets. Anthony in particular wrecked most of the Nuggets' season last year.
I for one, would like to see the Magic just make Howard play out his contract and if he doesn't like it, just de-activate him. I realize the Magic would prefer to get something in return for Howard. But, it sure would be cool if they just took a stand. NFL teams have done stuff like this before when athletes have been training camp holdouts. Keyshawn Johnson, Joey Galloway and Michael Crabtree all come to mind. I don't think any of those three came out of the situation in a more favorable public light than when they entered in. I wouldn't mind some of the public humiliation come to NBA players who are crying and moaning while still under contract.

NFL shouldn't suspend Pryor
The NFL has allowed former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor to enter the NFL via its supplemental draft, but has decreed that Pryor will be suspended for the first five games of the season. Pryor was forced to leave Ohio State before this season due to NCAA rules violations. The NCAA had suspended Pryor for the first five games of the season before his departure. Pryor had somehow been allowed to participate in last season's Sugar Bowl despite having been found being worthy of suspension by the NCAA.
However, this blog post is about the NFL. Pryor is no longer in the NCAA. And as far as I can tell, he hasn't violated any NFL rules, particularly since he declared himself eligible. So, in my view, the NFL has no business suspending him. Look, the guy messed up. Big time. But the NFL's job isn't too enforce NCAA rules. Pryor isn't eligible for the NCAA, I get it. But the NFL doesn't have to and shouldn't concern itself with cleaning up the NCAA's business. I get the NFL doesn't want to set an example that is a great escape from the NCAA.
But ask yourself this: wouldn't Pryor be better off if he was still in college? He undoubtedly would be. He would be able to showcase his skills on the national stage; plus he would be able to repair his damaged public image. As it is, NFL teams are going to be wary of drafting Pryor in the supplemental draft, and would be even if he wasn't suspended. Just being in the supplemental draft is plenty enough of a red flag for teams; it's not as if he declared for the original 2011 NFL Draft under his own free will. The punishment should be from his actions and that punishment is already significant. The NFL doesn't need to add on to something that wasn't a violation of its rules.

Giants take opener from Padres
My San Francisco Giants (79-62) won the opener of a four game series at Petco Park in San Diego tonight against the Padres (79-60) by a score of 7-3. The game featured Giants home runs by Aubrey Huff, Juan Uribe, Buster Posey and Pat Burrell. The offense really got the job done tonight. Matt Cain pitched 8+ strong innings, giving up 3 earned runs. The Giants now sit just one game back in the National League West and thanks to Atlanta's (80-61) loss to St. Louis (73-65) now are just one back in the Wild Card as well.
Now the focus turns to tomorrow night's game which gets underway at 8:05 p.m. MT and will be televised on MLB Network as well as MLB Extra Innings and mlb.tv. Jonathan Sanchez pitches for the Giants and Clayton Richard goes for the Padres. I feel confident that Sanchez will be able to pitch well tomorrow, he seems to be in a good groove of late and it seems like he pitches well against the Padres.
Oh and the NFL got underway tonight with the home-standing New Orleans Saints (1-0) knocking off the Minnesota Vikings (0-1) by a score of 14-9 in a rematch of last season's NFC Championship Game. It was a lower scoring match-up than I expected, but it sounds like the Saints are still happy with the win. I didn't watch much of the game as my focus was more on the Giants-Padres game tonight. I look forward to seeing how my Philadelphia Eagles do this year. They open the season at home Sunday at 2:15 p.m. MT against the Green Bay Packers.
