When I last posted, the World Champion San Francisco Giants were 61-44 and coming off taking 2 out of 3 from the Phillies (78-42) in Philadelphia. And the Giants had just acquired slugger Carlos Beltran, the premier piece on the trade market, from the New York Mets (59-62). The Giants led the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League West by 4 games. Things were looking up.
Now, Beltran is on the Disabled List and the Giants have gone 5-13 since my last post. Their record is 66-57 and they trail Arizona (69-53) by 3.5 games in the West. It doesn't help that the Diamondbacks never seem to lose anymore. The Giants are struggling and need to turn it around soon. Real soon. The schedule is approaching September, and the Giants don't want to be too far out of striking distance.
Beltran is far from the only one hurting right now. Stellar set-up man Sergio Romo is also on the DL, and starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez left tonight's game at the Braves (72-51) with an apparent injury. Nate Schierholtz and Jeff Keppinger also have suffered injuries of some sort and their prognosis for return isn't totally certain. Not to mention, Buster Posey and Freddy Sanchez are sidelined for the season. It seems the Giants have had more than their share of bad luck.
Still, all is not lost. It stands to reason that the Diamondbacks have to lose a few games and let's not forget, the Giants were even farther behind the Padres around this time last year. So, there's still hope, even if things are looking bleak right now and it kind of feels like this might not be the year. I'll keep paying attention and hoping for the best.

Sandoval out with fractured hamate bone
The World Champion San Francisco Giants (13-13) beat the Washington Nationals (12-14) today at Nationals Park 2-1, but that was not the story of the day. Third baseman Pablo Sandoval (.313 avg., 5 hr, 14 rbi) will be out 4 to 6 weeks with a fractured hamate bone in his right hand. This is really a tough break because Sandoval was off to a great start after working hard in the offseason to get into better shape.
The Giants have been rather putrid on offense lately and this only makes matters more difficult. It's actually pretty remarkable that the Giants are at .500 right now as well as 3-2 on this current road trip with how poorly they have been playing on offense at times. That is once again a testament to the pitching staff. I don't think everyone will stay cold forever, though. Andres Torres will hopefully be off the disabled list before long and Mark DeRosa shouldn't be out too long either. I think the team will be in the race throughout the summer.
Jonathan Sanchez was all over the place today, but only gave up one unearned run in five innings of work. Sanchez surrendered six walks, including four in the first inning, and hit two batters. He only gave up two hits, once again proving that his stuff is electric but that control is the central issue. Hopefully he works on that and is able to more consistently locate pitches.
Brian Wilson sure made things interesting in the bottom of the 9th, walking two and hitting another batter to load the bases. Wilson struck out Adam LaRoche on a 3-2 pitch to end the game. Just another day at the office, I suppose.

World Champion Giants take 2 of 3 in Denver
The World Champion San Francisco Giants (10-8) took 2 of 3 from the Colorado Rockies (13-5) at Coors Field in Denver this week. I was impressed with the way the Giants won the first two games. I still feel good about the series overall, even though they got hammered today -- can't win them all. Matt Cain had an off day today it seemed, but Tim Lincecum and Jonathan Sanchez were lights out in their starts. Pablo Sandoval seems to be reverting to his 2009 form, which is a good omen of things to come. I'm excited about this team and still think the Giants should be considered favorites to win the National League West this year.

World Champion Giants to raise banner
The World Champion San Francisco Giants (2-4) will host the St. Louis Cardinals (2-4) Friday afternoon at 2:35 p.m. MT on MLB Extra Innings and mlb.tv. It will be the home opener for the World Champions and the first time they have played a meaningful game at AT&T Park since the 2010 World Series last fall. I'm told there will be a number of awesome festivities before the game even starts, including the raising of the Giants' World Championship banner, which will be an awesome thing to see.
The game is almost secondary to me at this point, but I do think it would be a real shame if they were to lose their home opener. Jonathan Sanchez (0-1) will start for the World Champions and Jake Westbrook (0-1) will go for the Cardinals. It seems to me that the Giants got hosed by the scheduling process. I don't think they should have had to start out on the road against two division rivals that each were having their home openers. Oh well, I guess. Even Commissioner Bud Selig can't ruin what should be a great Friday in San Francisco. The Giants have started a little slow, but there is a lot of baseball left to be played and I think they will be just fine and be right there when the season winds down. And I think they definitely will benefit from playing at home. Go Giants!

Rangers win ALCS; Giants-Phillies Game 6 upcoming
The Texas Rangers defeated the New York Yankees 6-1 tonight to win the ALCS 4 games to 2. The clinched in front of a rabid home crowd to earn their first pennant and World Series berth in team history. Colby Lewis was really good for 8 innings of pitching and Vladimir Guerrero and Nelson Cruz both had big hits in a key 4-run fifth inning for the Rangers. Josh Hamilton took home the ALCS MVP award after a really good series. The Yankees walked him intentionally three different times tonight. The Rangers' lineup is flat out dangerous and their starting pitching has looked quite good as well. The bullpen has been a little shaky, but they did get a great outing from Derek Holland in Game 4 and Neftali Feliz has been dynamic as the closer. They will be a tough out for whoever plays them in what I think will be a long World Series.
I'm really, really happy that the Yankees have lost and won't win the World Series this year. As I've said before, to me they represent everything is wrong with baseball. They have an exorbitant payroll that reaches far beyond even what other large market teams are capable of and are basically poachers of players that other teams have developed. It's infuriating. They think they can just get whoever they want and essentially buy championships. So I was very happy to see all the shots of the Yankees and their long faces late in the game as the inevitability of losing this game sunk in on them. Good stuff.

Phillies even NLCS at 1-1
The San Francisco Giants lost Game 2 of the NLCS last night to the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 6-1. Roy Oswalt was dominant through eight innings, allowing only one run on a homer by -- who else -- Cody Ross. Jonathan Sanchez was pretty solid for the most part, he did walk three in the first inning but the third walk was granted on a missed call. The Phils were able to get a run when Oswalt ignored a stop sign from his third base coach and Aubrey Huff cut off an on target throw from center fielder Andres Torres that likely would have had Oswalt out by at least ten feet. Huff said he saw the stop sign and his instincts were to cut the ball off. It was a tough play, but the Giants still likely would have lost the game anyway.
After an intentional walk to Jayson Werth in the 7th, Jimmy Rollins hit a bases clearing double to bust the game open and make it 6-1. Even with Rollins struggling lately, he's not the guy you want up there in that situation if you're the Giants. J-Roll loves the big stage and has a knack for coming through in the clutch -- it's what he does. I wasn't surprised to see the big hit there that just missed being a grand slam.

You can't understate what a big performance this was from Oswalt to even the series at 1-1 heading back to San Francisco. He was dynamic and seemed determined to get the win. Game 3 is tomorrow afternoon at 2:19 p.m. MT on FOX. The ALCS resumes tonight with it being imperative for the Rangers to get a win with their ace Cliff Lee on the mound. Here's the details:

Giants win the West!
At left: 3B Pablo Sandoval hugs CF Andres Torres (56) after the Giants defeated the Padres 3-0 to clinch the NL West.The San Francisco Giants (92-70) topped the San Diego Padres (90-72) to win the National League West on Sunday afternoon. The offense was supplied by RBI hits by Freddy Sanchez and Aubrey Huff, both of which came on the heels of a triple from pitcher Jonathan Sanchez, as well as a home run by Buster Posey in the 8th inning. Jonathan Sanchez threw five strong, scoreless innings and the bullpen was able to close the door. Brian Wilson worked a 1-2-3 9th inning to record his franchise record tying 48th save of the year.
It was really awesome to watch the Giants clinch a playoff berth for the first time since 2003. It's just an incredible feeling to watch your favorite team accomplish something that they have worked so hard for. It's a long season and to win the division on the final day is quite an accomplishment. That's another thing about baseball that I love: the regular season means so much. In no other sport do you see guys celebrating a playoff berth this way. Every year there are good teams (like the Padres this year) who don't make the playoffs which makes getting there all the more special. I like that the season has been watered down and that you have to be one of the top teams just to get to the playoffs, unlike in other sports where about half the teams make it, often with records hovering around the .500 mark.
With the win, the Padres were eliminated and the Atlanta Braves (91-71) won the Wild Card following their 8-7 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies (97-65) earlier in the day. The Giants and Braves meet for Game 1 of their best-of-five series on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. MT on TBS. I'm really excited to have my guys in the playoffs. It should be a fun ride. Go Giants!

Game 162
The San Francisco Giants (91-70) host the San Diego Padres (90-71) in the last scheduled game of the regular season today at 2:05 p.m. MT. For some reason, the game doesn't appear to be scheduled for national TV so you'll have to catch it on MLB Extra Innings or mlb.tv. Jonathan Sanchez starts for the Giants and Mat Latos goes for the Padres. The first place Giants have lost the first two games of the weekend series to the second place Padres, but can still clinch the National League West with a win today.
The Atlanta Braves (90-71) are currently tied with the Padres for the National League Wild Card. The Braves host the Philadelphia Phillies (97-64) today and currently lead 6-2 in the bottom of the 5th inning. The Phillies have already assured themselves of home field advantage throughout the playoffs, but have still beaten the Braves in the first two games of that series.
No matter what happens, the Giants cannot be eliminated from the playoffs today. Giants move into first place
For the first time since May 6, and the first time in September since 2003, the San Francisco Giants (83-64) have moved into sole possession of first place in the National League West. It became official after the San Diego Padres (82-64) lost to the St. Louis Cardinals (75-70) and the Giants followed that up with a 10-2 beat down of the hated Dodgers (72-75).
It was a great feeling when the Giants recorded that third out in the 9th inning to know that they are now in first place and that they are now the ones being chased rather than doing the chasing. I know it's just a half-game lead and that every game matters, but it's still a different feeling to be in first. Here's to hoping that the Giants keep it up with 15 games to play on the year.
Last night Jonathan Sanchez was really good and simply dealing through 7 innings last night. He had a career high 12 strikeouts and looked like he was in complete control throughout. Aubrey Huff had a big three run home run that was immediately followed by a solo shot from Buster Posey and Jose Guillen had a monster two run home run of his own. The offense looked really good throughout. Huff has been such a bargain this year and been the Giants' best offensive player throughout, leading the team in avg. (.294), home runs (25), and RBIs (84). And of course Posey is an NL Rookie of the Year candidate. The offense was really hitting well last night and hopefully they keep it up.
The Giants start a 3 game series at home against the Milwaukee Brewers (67-78) tonight with the three games starting at 8:15, 7:05 and 2:05 p.m. MT Friday through Sunday. All three games are available via MLB Extra Innings and mlb.tv. Madison Bumgarner goes against Randy Wolf tonight, Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito start the final two games of the series against the Giants. The Padres continue their series in St. Louis and the Rockies (80-66) who are 2.5 games out play the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

NL West and Wild Card tight heading down stretch
My San Francisco Giants (82-64) are a half-game back of the San Diego Padres (82-63) for the lead in the National League West and a half-game back of the Atlanta Braves (83-64) in the Wild Card chase. A win tonight in the series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers (72-74) at AT&T Park at 8:15 p.m. MT on mlb.tv would put the Giants in a dead heat with the Braves. The Padres are losing on the road against the St. Louis Cardinals (74-70) by a score of 2-0 in the 6th inning and if they lose the Giants could move into sole possession of first place with a victory tonight.
The Colorado Rockies (80-66) are 2.5 games back in the West and Wild Card races as of this moment and have just been cooled off by losing 2 of 3 at home to the Padres following a ten game win streak. Thankfully the Rockies are headed on the road (starting with a three game series at Chavez Ravine against the Dodgers this weekend) where they are just 29-42.

Tuesday night was a tough 1-0 loss to the Dodgers on an unearned run; Barry Zito pitched well enough to win. Matt Cain was outstanding through 7 last night and the offense finally came to life with a pinch-hit double by Travis Ishikawa in the bottom of the 7th. Pinch-runner Emmanuel Burriss came around to score from third on a clutch two-out single by Mike Fotenot to give the Giants the lead. They added a run in the 8th and went on to win 2-1. A win would be big tonight for the Giants -- they have been chasing for a while and after tonight they could be in the position of being the ones being chased in the West. Jonathan Sanchez starts for the Giants and Ted Lilly goes for the Dodgers.
One of my favorite players in all of baseball, Giants center fielder Andres Torres, had an emergency appendectomy early Sunday morning and will be out for at least a week or two from when it happened. Torres really has been the spark-plug at the top of the lineup this season for the Giants so hopefully he isn't out too long and can fully recover in a relatively short amount of time. It's just a tough break, there isn't really anything you can do about that, but at least the appendix didn't burst before they removed it. I'm hoping to see Torres back realistically in about a week and a half.

Giants take opener from Padres
My San Francisco Giants (79-62) won the opener of a four game series at Petco Park in San Diego tonight against the Padres (79-60) by a score of 7-3. The game featured Giants home runs by Aubrey Huff, Juan Uribe, Buster Posey and Pat Burrell. The offense really got the job done tonight. Matt Cain pitched 8+ strong innings, giving up 3 earned runs. The Giants now sit just one game back in the National League West and thanks to Atlanta's (80-61) loss to St. Louis (73-65) now are just one back in the Wild Card as well.
Now the focus turns to tomorrow night's game which gets underway at 8:05 p.m. MT and will be televised on MLB Network as well as MLB Extra Innings and mlb.tv. Jonathan Sanchez pitches for the Giants and Clayton Richard goes for the Padres. I feel confident that Sanchez will be able to pitch well tomorrow, he seems to be in a good groove of late and it seems like he pitches well against the Padres.
Oh and the NFL got underway tonight with the home-standing New Orleans Saints (1-0) knocking off the Minnesota Vikings (0-1) by a score of 14-9 in a rematch of last season's NFC Championship Game. It was a lower scoring match-up than I expected, but it sounds like the Saints are still happy with the win. I didn't watch much of the game as my focus was more on the Giants-Padres game tonight.
