The Utah Runnin' Utes got swept by the Oregon schools this weekend. The Runnin' Utes hung with Oregon and actually had led by 8 and still had the lead with 6 minutes to go, but it appeared the Utes just ran out of steam. The Ducks looked much deeper and were able to keep pressure applied to Utah, who was going with a short rotation.
Today against Oregon State, the Beavers jumped out to a double digit lead in the first half. It looked like the Utes weren't playing with enough defensive intensity and were certainly hurt by starters Kareem Storey and Dijon Farr being in foul trouble and having to sit out much of the half. The Utes were able to play with the Beavers in the second half, but just got into too big of a hole.
I think Utah could still win a couple more games this year, but they will have to play hard for 40 minutes and stay out of foul trouble. I've heard coach Larry Krystkowiak has a solid recruiting class coming in and that couple with a few key cogs returning should help the Utes be deeper and more competitive next year. Unfortunately, it's been a painful rebuilding season for Utah. The Runnin' Utes visit Arizona State next Thursday night and Arizona next Saturday.

Auburn wins BCS National Championship
#1 Auburn (14-0) defeated #2 Oregon (12-1) last night 22-19 to win the BCS National Championship. The Tigers kicked a field goal as time ran out to come away with the victory. Oregon had scored a touchdown and two point conversion just a couple of minutes earlier to deadlock the game at 19.
I was surprised by how well both team's defenses played throughout the game. Both schools seemed to have trouble putting points on the board, especially Oregon. Auburn seemed to move the ball a little bit more consistently, which is the opposite of what I thought would happen. However, both teams made plays on offense when they needed to. It was a thrilling game and was just about everything you could ask for from a BCS Championship Game except that the wrong team won. I still think it's a little ridiculous that Cam Newton wasn't punished at all with regard to all the allegations of a pay-for-play type agreement orchestrated by his father. However, Newton is a great player and played really well. I think the NCAA should have done something about the allegations, but we just have to live with what happened I guess.

College football BCS National Championship Game tomorrow night
The college football BCS National Championship Game is tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. MT on ESPN and espn3.com. The game pits #1 Auburn (13-0) against #2 Oregon (12-0). Auburn is led by Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton who is capable of beating teams with his arm and his legs. He will be a handful for the Ducks. Oregon features an explosive, fast-paced offense that few teams have been able to keep up with or contain this season. The Ducks are paced by running back LaMichael James.
Both teams look solid, but in my view the clear edge goes to Oregon. I think the Ducks are just too fast and efficient for the Tigers to hold them down. Auburn will give them a game but I'm picking Oregon to win by 10. Auburn will have to make a few defensive stops and take some time off the clock on offense to stay in the game, but Newton should make some plays to keep it competitive. Giants drop Game 5, series goes back to Philly
The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Francisco Giants 4-2 tonight in Game 5 of the NLCS. The Giants still lead the series 3 games to 2. Game 6 is Saturday in Philadelphia with the start time yet to be determined (it depends on the outcome of Game 6 of the ALCS tomorrow night). Roy Halladay had a strained groin and seemed to be in trouble every inning for the Phillies but he gutted out six innings and had just enough to earn the win. The Phillies did most of their offensive damage in the 3rd inning, scoring three runs off Giants ace Tim Lincecum who suffered his first postseason defeat.
The Giants' defense let them down in the 3rd inning as Pablo Sandoval missed third base on a bunt attempt by Halladay that would have resulted in a double play and Aubrey Huff misplayed a groundball that ricocheted into center field and allowed two runs to score. The offense had some chances in the first inning as well but Phillies first baseman was able to snare a ball that Huff hit right on the screws for an out. If not for that play, the inning could have been a lot bigger than it was with the one early run the Giants did get. It's bad luck on that play, but part of baseball at the same time.
I thought Halladay showed a lot of heart tonight. It was clear he didn't have his best stuff, but he still only gave up two runs in six innings which to me shows a lot of character. And to find out after the game that he strained his groin in the second inning only makes his performance more impressive.
Cody Ross continues to be the frontrunner for NLCS MVP as he doubled in another run to push his RBI total to 5 for the series. He just seems to keep coming up with big hits in big situations. Let's hope he continues to swing a hot bat in Philadelphia.
I'm still optimistic about the Giants. They have already won in Philadelphia in the series and have Jonathan Sanchez and Matt Cain to pitch Games 6 and 7 against Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels. Hopefully Game 7 isn't necessary, but it's nice to know that Saturday isn't an elimination game. I can hardly wait to see what happens. Game time should be just before 6 p.m. MT if the Rangers close out the Yankees tomorrow and just before 2 p.m. MT if the hated Yanks force a Game 7 in Texas for Saturday night. Speaking of the ALCS, it resumes tomorrow night. Here's the details:

And in another sports note, did anyone else notice what kind of beat down #1 Oregon (7-0, 4-0 Pac-10) put on UCLA (3-4, 1-3 Pac-10) tonight? The final score in Autzen was 60-13. The Ducks look really good and really fast. They are going to be tough to beat. I'm not a big Oregon fan per se, but their team sure is fun to watch play.

Utes visit Lobos in first road game
In college football tonight, the 14th ranked Utah Utes (2-0, 1-0 Mountain West Conference) visit the New Mexico Lobos (0-2, 0-0 MWC) at 6 p.m. at University Stadium in Albuquerque. The game will be televised on the mtn. which is channels 616 and 616-1 (HD) on DirecTV and channel 37 on Comcast in the Salt Lake City area.
Terrance Cain is once again expected to get the start for the Utes in place of Jordan Wynn who is nursing an injured thumb. Cain looked solid against UNLV last week and I expect more of the same tonight. The Utes' defense has looked really strong in the first two games of the year and I expect them to have little trouble with New Mexico, which is coming off a 1-win season last year and has looked horrible in their first two games. The Lobos lost 72-0 at Oregon in their first game and dropped their home opener last week to Texas Tech 52-17.
I expect the Utes to win big tonight. New Mexico has really struggled under new coach Mike Locksley who is in his second year. I expect those struggles will continue tonight. Utah should by three touchdowns at a bare minimum and probably will win by more than that.
